Brighton , August 29 and 30. TheSussex eleven had been so consistently unsuccessful during the season , that a victory in their last match would have been something of a surprise . Still , it must be stated that in this case they had all the worst of the luck in losing the toss , and they had so much the worst of the luck on the second day that their ill success is easily explained . Middlesex , batting first on a fairly easy wicket , were in three hours and ten minutes for a total of 228 , of which twobatsmen contributed more than half . The scoring , indeed , wasvery uneven , as six of the eleven only accounted for 24 runs between them. The chief con- tributor was P. J. T. Henery , whose 81 was a finely hit , but rather lucky innings . O na pitch drying under the influence of the sun, J. T. Hearne and Rawlin bowledwith great effect . They were unchanged throughout the match, and only one batsman(W. G. Heasman), whowas the highest scorer on the side with 29, got double figures each time. Middlesex wonby an innings and 43 runs . Middlesex, 228. Sussex, 98 and 87 ; total , 185 . Rawlin(Middlesex) Hearne, J. T. (Middlesex ) O v e r s. 4 2 . 4 4 4 M a i d e n s.
