Sussex. Manchester , M a y19 and 20. Amatch of brief duration , the consequence of a wicket affected by a heavy rainfall . The game, indeed , was so far advanced on the first day that twenty- three wickets fell . Though they were placed at a serious disadvantage in losing the toss , Sussex , thanks to a freely -hit score of 33 by Guttridge , whose first appearance it was for the county, were able to get a lead of 17 runs on the first innings . W h e nLancashire wentin a second time, however, Sugg (43) and A. Ward(54) hit out with great resolution , and by the end of the day Lancashire had gained a considerable advantage, being 114 on with only three batsmen out. Rain prevented a renewal until past three o'clock on the second afternoon , and then the bowlers were so muchin evidence that the remaining seventeen wickets were secured for an aggregate of 152 runs . Sussex hada hopeless task whenthey went in for the fourth innings with 196 to win. Before the ball began to bite , Bean and Marlow, the first batsmen, put on 33, but, subsequently , Watson and Mold carried everything before them, and the side wereall outfor 77. Marlow asin over anhouranda half for 18. Lancashire
