Having injured his armin a matchat Glasgow, Maurice Readdid not appear, and his place was filled by Mr. R. N. Douglas . In the Sussex eleven , the veteran HenryPhillips and Parris (whobats left and bowls right hand) played vice Butt and Mr. C. A. Smith. Anoteworthy performance was accomplished for Sussex by Marlow, w h ocarried his bat through the innings for 43, on a wicket that favoured the bowlers from start to finish . Lockwoodand Lohmann, with 49 and 40 respec- tively , were the highest scorers in Surrey's total . The match was drawn. Surrey, 205. Sussex, 123 and 11 (one wicket) ; total , 134. (5) Surrey v. Leicestershire , Oval, M a y4 and 5. Thanks to the free hitting of Mr. De Trafford (78) and Pougher (57) , Leicestershire actually claimed a lead of 63 runs on the first innings . In the second , however, Abel , who had scored 43 the first time, hit up another good innings of 62, and Maurice Read made68 by free hitting . At one time, when theywentin again, Leicestershire had got 50 for one wicket , but afterwards such a breakdownoccurred that Surrey wonby73 runs. Surrey , 158 and 265 ; total , 423. Leicestershire , 221 and 129 ; total , 350 . (6) Surreyv. H a m p s h i r e. Oval, M a y7 and 8. O nwinning the toss , the Surrey batsmen scored at a tremendous rate , Lockwood( 100 ), Henderson (105), and Mr. W. W.Read(80) being the principal scorers in a huge total of 494. This was Henderson's first three-figure innings for Surrey, and both he and Lockwoodplayed splendid cricket . Being without Mr. H. W. Forster , Captain Wynyard, and Roberts , Hampshire could only expect this result . Mr. Shuter for once stood out of the Surrey team. Surrey w o nbyaninnings and 342 runs. Surrey, 494. Lucas and Rowewere absentees from Essex, Surreyh a dto find substitutes for W o o dandL o c k w o o d. Messrs . H. G. Owen(24 and 37) and R. P. Sewell (33 and 11) alone got double figures twice for the losers , and both of them played exceedingly well . Lohmann'sbowling was a great factor in the result . Surrey wonby an innings and 69 runs.
