James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1892
7 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. metwith in August, at the hands of Somersetshire and Middlesex , m a yhave been-in part , at any rate the result of too muchcricket , and in the latter match at Lord's they were really beaten by the ground. It maybe said at once that RobertAbel has never before had such a successful season since he first joined the ranks of first -class cricketers . In all matches for the county Abel scored over a thousand runs , and he had several days of unprecedented success . Lohmann, too , in addition to his fine bowling , played many brilliant innings . With the ball , he eclipsed his previous season's record both in the aggregate and the average . Sharpe's analysis is about the same, though he did not take so manywickets , while Lockwood, if he was not so successful as was expected with the bat, made a remarkable advance as a bowler . Though hedid not get through nearly so muchwork, he had a better average than any other Surrey bowler, and he generally maintained a remarkably good pace. His brilliant performances at the end of the year will invest his future with addi- tional interest . Of the older hands, Messrs . Shuter and Keywere not so successful in batting as last year. Maurice Read was scarcely so consistent as of old , albeit he often played a brilliant game for his side . The Surrey eleven got through a programme of twenty -six matches altogether (as against twenty -five in 1890), of which they lost only four . Resultsof M a t c h e s.
