If Barnes was unable to assist Notts , Surrey were still more unfortunate in being without either of the Cantabs , Messrs . Streatfield , Wells, and Douglas , as well as Lockwood, who had such a severe cold that Bowleyfilled his place . They, however, wonthe toss , whenAbel (103) and Mr. Key(59) gave a splendid exhibition of batting , adding 106 while together . The little professional gave but one chance-a difficult one, at 70 ; moreover, he followed this up by a second innings of 63 (not out) thus scoring 166 for once out . Indeed, his batting and Lohmann'sgood bowling fairly wonSurrey the match. Themost reputable of the Notts batsmen failed the first time, andthey had to follow on, whenGunn, who had the misfortune to be run out , played grandly for 59. But the feature of the Nottinghambatting was Mr. J. A. Dixon's two innings of 73 and 62. Surrey w o nby five wickets . Surrey, 250 and 115 (five wickets ) ; total , 365. Notts , 147and217; total , 364. (2) N o t t sv. Y o r k s h i r e. Nottingham , June 11, 12, and 13. Yorkshire were not in full strength without Lord Hawke, Moorhouse, and Whitehead, whose places were filled by Mr. A. Sellars , and by two most promising youngsters ,Wardall of Bacup, and Tunnicliffe of Pudsey. Notts ' one effort proved sufficient without going in again . Nine of the side got into double figures , though Barnes ' 104 andGunn's 58were the features of the display . The veteran Barnes gave no actual chance , and a sum of £11 10s . was collected for himin the pavilion . This was Notts' first victory of the season-by an innings and25 runs . Notts , 336.
