Steel -his only appearance for Lancashire during the season -and Mr. A. C. McLaren , Lancashire were easily beaten in the end. The fine batting of Maurice Read (38 and57), Lohmann(50 and 49), Henderson (0 and 50), and Mr. Shuter (15 and 34) enabled Surrey to put their opponents in to make 284, which they utterly failed to do. In the last half of the game, however, it should be stated that Lancashire were without Briggs and Watson, who were both taken ill . This being so, Mr. Shuter generously refrained from closing the innings . The best batting for the losers was by Mr. McLaren (51 and 19, both not out), and Frank Sugg (41 and 17).
