4 6 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. C H A P T E R II. T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1891. G L O U C E S T E R S H I R E . OFFICERS FOR 1891.-President , Duke of Beaufort , K.G. Vice -President , Lord Fitzhardinge . Treasurer , W.H. Harford . Captain , W. G. Grace . Secretary , E. M. Grace . Committee , J. W. Arrowsmith , H. W. Beloe , H. J. Bough- ton, S. H. Brookes , J. A. Taylor , and F. Townsend . W I T Hthe acquisition of Mr. Sainsbury from Somersetshire , the discovery of a new wicket -keeper of considerable promise in Board, and the intelligence that Woofwould be available all the season through , there seemed some reason for the anticipation that Gloucestershire would fulfil the promise shown so unmistakably during the July and August matches of 1890. Theeleven , how- ever, suffered from ill -luck in morewaysthan one. Dr. W. G. Grace beganthe season well , but had the misfortune to injure his knee, and this hada serious effect on the general play of the side . H ehad to stand out of three engage- ments, in others he did not play up to his true form, and but for a fine not-out innings of 72, quite at the close of the season , would not have reached an average of twenty. Moreover, Mr. Cranston , whoplayed so finely in 1890 , owing to ill- health hadto be left out of the team-another severe loss . Mr. Radcliffe batted nearly always well , sometimes brilliantly ; Painter also played several fine innings ; and the veteran Dr. E. M. Grace unmistakably proved that he has not yet lost his old form. It was only natural that Woof, with such a lot of the heavy workwith the ball falling upon him, should prove a trifle expensive , and the same m a ybe said of Roberts . The bowling of Murchshowed a marked improvement. Thecounty is sadly in need of the infusion of fresh talent , though, butit should be noted that according to arrangement Mr. Ferris will be available f r o mJ u n en e x t. Opponents.
