Amatch for the benefit of Arnold Rylott , a veteran of twenty years ' service at Lord's . The sides were almost representative , though Shrewsbury (w h owasunwell), Briggs , and Sugg were absent from the North, while Board ofGloucestershire replaced Woodas wicket -keeper for the South . Most of the scoring in the South's first innings wasdone by Mr. W. G. Grace and Lohmann, w h omade61 each . Abel, Maurice Read, andMr. Cranston all failing to score . Similarly , the North would have fared badly but for Barnes (72) and Peel (31 ), w h oadded 75 while together . Barnes was at the wickets three hours and ten minutes for his splendid 72. Thanks to a brilliantly hit second innings of 77 by Read, and to the effective bowling of Sharpe and Martin on the third day, the South managedto get homeby34 runs. South, 168 and150 ; total , 318. North, 193 and91 ; total , 284.
