A. very useful cricketer ; a powerful bats- m a n, and in this department of morevalue than his average wouldimply ; good field ; bowls fast right -hand, but unfortunately incapacitated this year, owing to a severe strain . HEWETT, H. T. (Harrowand Oxford). One of the very best left -handed batsmen in England, hitting hard all round ; excellent point . To his good judgment as captain muchof the County's success in the last two seasons is due. HILL, V. T. (Winchester ). A free left -handed bat , and has much improved this year; at short slip muchabove the average ; fair right -handbowler. NEWTON, A. E. (Eton and Oxford). Quite in the first rank of amateur wicket -keepers , standing well up to the fastest bowling ; very useful and plucky bat, generally making runs when wanted; good field anywhere. (M.C.C. Bats in very good style , and shows exceptional promise ; keen and quick field . POYNTON , H. J. (Marlborough ). His first season with Somerset ; a good bat , anda keen and hard-working field . ROBINSON, C. J. A brilliant hitter , with fair defence ; magnificent field any- where, and safe catch . ROE, W. N. (Cambridge). Goodbat, with great punishing powers ; good slow bowler; very good field , with a quick return . YOUNG, W. A. R. (Harrow ). Useful man all round , being a steady and reliable bat, and very good out -field , with a safe pair of hands ; fair slow bowler . WICKHAM, Rev. A. P. (Marlborough and Oxford ). Avery valuable acquisition to Somerset ; he has fully maintained his Oxford reputation as a wicket- keeper, standing well up to any kind of bowling ; andvery quick , especially onthe leg-side ; improving bat.
