James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1892
1 5 6 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. thebathasmost excellent abilities , which he either ignores bypoking, or abuses bypulling ; his fielding was very painful indeed , and his bowling plain ,generally sacrificing precision to pace. E. A. Burrill (6.3) : Areally good left -handbowler , with a very nice action ; has a most telling break-back, and,but for a damagedhand, would havedone evenbetter ; should vary his pacemore, anddoes not place his field judiciously ; with the bat he should do well ,but wasun- successful till the last match, whenhe played a really good innings . T. E. S. White (8.5) : Beganthe season very well ,but fell off all round ;his batting ,which is otherwise mostpromising , is marred with a tendency to play across ; with the gloves he was uneven, holding mostof his catches , andtaking the leg ones well , but stumping nobody. H. L. S. Cooper (2) : Played well , and scored consistently for the second eleven , which gives hopes of scores , hitherto unmade, for the first ; his bowling was plain , with a lot of bad ones , but as a good field and safe catch hewasan oasis in the dreary wilderness of this year . G. W. Cosser (7.7 ): Apromising left- handedbat, whooften played a good innings , and madea good hit apparently unintentionally ; his bowling action is laboured , but distinctly merits cultivation ; worked harder than most people in thefield . T. G. Le Mesurier (12.4 ) : Wouldmakea really good bat if he would learn to play forward ; his back play is sound , and he has a very good cut,but is weak onthe leg- stump; slow in the field . R. H. Newman(8.5) : Naturally a good field ,but spoils his workby using one hand; a stiff but useful bat ; might make a bowler . J. H. Castell (4.5): Should makea bat, but must avoid pulling ; a slinging bowler ,keeping low, and likely to be useful . J. J. Turpin (3) : Lies in wait for the half volleys to leg, which he invariably spanks for four . B O W L I N GA V E R A G E S . Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. E. A. Cleave (14.2 ) : Hastaken great pains with the material at his disposal , andshown great judgment in changing the bowling ; reliable bat ; has brought off somebrilliant catches at point ; good change bowler , but easily discouraged . *A. E. Bonsey (5.3 ) : Avery fair bat, hassomegood strokes on the off , but mars his play by an ugly cross stroke ; goodbut slow field ; fair change bowler . J. A. Francis (3.7) : Fair steady bat, but almost too careful ; fair field . *J. B. Hall (6.1): Goodfast bowler , making the most of his strength and height ; as a bat uncertain ; good field . *A. H. Hodson (3.6 ) : Goodleft -handbowler , mediumpace, getting adeal of work on the ball both ways, always keeping a good length ; as a bat poor, but hits hard. C. E. Muckleston (5.5) : A poor bat, lacking power; belied his reputation as a bowler ; good field at point . *R. M. Rees (11.9 ) : Good and painstaking bat,but his small stature is against him; on a wet wicket sure to score ; good field . *C. Perkins (10) : Very fair bat, and plays in good style , but is weakonthe leg ; made up for faulty fielding early in the season by some brilliant work at square -leg later on. G. S. F. Rutty (5.1) : Fair bat ; very good field in the country . *G. E. Wollen : good bat, hits hard on the off , but is weak on the leg; un- certain field . W. B. Saudberg (6.7 ) : Cameout late in the season ; a very fair bat, andplays in good style ; fair field . *E. G. Williams (6) : As a bat has had hard luck; good and plucky wicket -keeper . *F. J. Yonge (5) : Agood bowler on slow wickets , with a big break from the leg, which he sometimes overdoes ; fair but ugly bat ; good field . B O W L I N GA V E R A G E S . O v e r s. M a i d e n s.
