Donaldson : Agood captain ; as a bat, very vigorous , and a quick scorer , but did not stay in long enough; fielded finely at point ; but as a bowler was hardly sufficiently steady , though he did one or twogood performances . H. Savory : Not very successful with the bat ; a safe field at mid-off. D. M'Lachlan ; A most useful bat and strong leg -hitter ; more thanonce, notably at Rossall and Merchiston , he saved his side from disaster ; a safe wicket -keeper , and, when he cared to stand close up, very smart. R. B. Pearson : Disappointed every one in his batting , but fully madeup for it by his bowling ; perhaps a bowler of a higher class than anyw ehave had since 1878 ; asafe though slow field . A. G. Cochran : The best bat in the eleven ; has scored consistently all the season , but, owing perhaps to a rather cramped style of defence, gets caught too often behind the wickets ; not great as a field . J. S. Napier: Hasnot mademanyruns ; as a field fairly safe , though not so good as hemightbe; a shocking judge of a run. D. W. Donaldson : Improved wonder- fully in the field , and was really good the latter half of the season ; a steady bat, just beginning to makeruns. A . G. Cowan : Ought to have scored more highly , though he played some very valuable innings ; a very fair field , and a most use
