James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1892

THE UNIVERSITIES AND PUBLICSCHOOLSIN 1891 . 1 3 1 likely with more strength to make a good bat ; he has fair defence , and knows how to hit and whento refrain ; a fair change bowler, and an active and effi- cient field . *A. Perry : Has proved very useful to his side , with fair defence and good driving powers ; his cutting and leg -hitting are not good ; has kept wicket very well. A. Rawthmell : At present mis -times the bowling , and has poor backplay and defence ; a plucky and determined field ; he should practise bowling and get a better length . *P. James : An excellent ground field , with smart and precise return ; has often failed to score through nervousness and a bad pokeforward ; but has played capital cricket in excellent style . E. Rose : A fair change bowler whoshould submit to steady practice ; as abatsman plays a dashing game, making some very taking strokes ; plays and hits badly at leg balls because he does not stand up and face them; is too fond of a big hit in the air ; a safe catch , somewhatslow in the field . H. Leggett : Aleft -hand medium- paced bowler, whohas done wonders on a wicket that suited him; as a batsman wants freedom and power, but has a very useful defence of his own; a fair field . W. Auden: Drives and hits to leg well , plays back awkwardlyand stiffly , is often too slow for the ball ; as a field will do his best to stop anything . R. T. Smith : Hasmuchimproved in standing up to and timing the bowling , will not hit well to leg till he is more upright ; a useful change bowler wholacks control over the ball ; a useful field , though often too slovenly ; a fairly safe catch ; plays up best at a crisis .
