Hastings , September 14, 15, and 16. Theprofessionals got so long a lead after dismissing their opponents for a paltry total of 68, that the result could never be in doubt. ThePlayers ' large total of 390 was due to three batsmen , Gunn, Ulyett , and Chatterton , and the former has rarely given a more brilliant display . He scored 169 , and his last 69 weregot in sixty -five minutes . Though making every effort to retrieve themselves , the Gentlemen could not do so,but Mr. W.W. Read played a most brilliant innings of 77-his highest of the year . He was fairly well supported by Messrs . Stoddart and Murdoch,but with Mr. Pigg indisposed , the amateurs could only bat ten men, and the Players wondecisively by aninnings and 128 runs .
