James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1892
8 2 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. neither of the matchesagainst M.C.C.andGround-either at Lord's or at Scar- borough-could be even commenced. I n all matches for the county, both Hall andUlyett exceeded the thousand runs . Thelatter proved himself , indeed , one of the mostsuccessful batsmenof the year, and fromfirst to last showedn o diminution of his old form. Peel, too, fell not far short of a four-figure aggre- gate, and his all-round cricket stands out in bold relief in an unsatisfactory season . Thoughmost of the other older batsmen failed to come up to expecta- tions , three likely colts in either department were introduced in Cartman, Wardall, and Tunnicliffe . O n at least one occasion , too , Mr. S. R. Jackson, captain of the Leeds Club, exhibited promising form. W h e navailable , the two University cricketers , Messrs . F. S. Jackson (who is no relation to the afore- mentioned Mr. S. R. Jackson) and Ernest Smith, generally did good service . In bowling, the great bulk of the work fell uponWainwright, Peel, and Harrison , w h obetween them were responsible for as manyas 393 wickets . This is , of course , counting all matches , and Wainwrighthad the better average of the trio . Thepremature death of Hunter did not cause such a void in the wicket -keeping department as might have been anticipated , his younger brother David having already most worthily filled the vacancy occasioned by his declining health .
