(1) S u s s e xv. Y o r k s h i r e. Dewsbury, June 1 and 2. Thefirst victory gained by Sussex over a county of its ownclass since M a y, 1890. Quaife (47) and Humphreys(49) were the principal scorers in the Sussex total of 187. Assisted a good deal by the state of the ground, Beanwas enabled to perform a splendid bowling feat . The Yorkshire fielding was very poor. Sussex had nowbeaten the Marylebone Club, Hampshire, and Yorkshire in succession . Sussex wonbyaninnings and 31 runs . Yorkshire , 95 and61 ; total , 156. O nthis occasion the Yorkshiremen fully atoned for their previous defeat . Havingdisposed of Sussex for a moderate total , Yorkshire wentin, and after losing Hall and Wardall for 3 runs , a splendid stand was madeby Peel (128) and Ulyett (109). So brilliantly did this pair hit that at one time 73 were made in thirty -five minutes , and altogether their stand produced 180 runs . Ulyett's , the shorter innings of the two, was marred by only one chance , whenhe had made23, while Peel (who was in four hours and twenty minutes ) similarly had only one life . Sussex only slightly improved upon their previous total , their principal contributors in either innings being Marlow(42 and 28), Mr. C. A. Smith(39 and 0), and Mr. W. H. Andrews (6 and 46). Yorkshire w o nbyan innings and 55 runs. Yorkshire , 351. Sussex , 139 and 157 ; total , 296.
