Oval, July 2 and 3. Agreat triumph for the Amateurs, who, in truth , were represented by avery powerfulside . A tthe same time, and while the Players ' eleven could scarcely have been improved upon, neither Messrs . A. G. Steel , Newham, nor Nepean were able to assist the Gentlemen. In Mr. J. J. Ferris , the celebrated Aus- tralian , and Mr. S. M. J. Woods, however, they hada pair of splendid bowlers , w h ofully justified their selection . As in the Oval match of 1890 , it will be seen that as manyas four Cambridge University cricketers assisted the Gentlemen- and, singularly enough , precisely the same four . After a somewhat disappoint- ing display by the professionals , the Gentlemen's turn came, when Mr. Ernest Smith, of Oxford University , Mr. W. W. Read, and Mr. Stoddart fairly bore off the batting honours . Mr. Smith had previously given proof of his capacity to hit, and on this occasion he punished all the bowling with equal impartiality , hitting all round the wicket with the utmost freedom and brilliancy . His 76 wasa very fine display . On a fast -drying wicket , which just suited Mr. Ferris , thePlayers never had a chance whenthey went in again, and the match came to an unexpectedly early conclusion . In the two days , 12,029 persons paid for admission . It is worthy of note that this was the first time for ten years that theGentlemenhadwonat the Oval. Hunterin every wayjustified his selection to keepwicket , andof course the same remark applies to Mr. Gregor McGregor onthe opposite side . P L A Y E R S .
