James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891

T H EM A R Y L E B O N EC L U BIN 1800. 7 1 ston, T. C. O'Brien , and W. C. Hedley, replacing Messrs . Spofforth , Streat- feild , Douglas, and Roller . In the Players ' eleven , Sherwin and Quaife replaced M .Readand Wood. TheGentlemenwere fortunate in winning the toss , on a wicket which played fairly easy after the rain . The feature of the innings was the partnership of Messrs . Cranston and Read on the fall of the third wicket , which added 68 runs, and the stand by Messrs . Cranston and Shuter , which added80 to the score . After the latter's departure , LohmannandBriggs finished off the innings in startling fashion , the last five wickets going downfor 15 runs. Mr. Read's runs were made in his very best style , whilst the Gloucestershire amateur (whose first matchthis was for the Gentlemen at Lord's ), carried out his bat for 68, aninnings in which he gave no chance, andwhichcombined free hitting with a resolute defence . ThePlayers ' first innings , which lasted under twohours, wasonly remarkable for the stubborn defence of Shrewsbury, and it is a significant fact that three run-getters like Gunn, Sugg, and Quaife could only get 6 runs between them. Mr. Steel , who was a failure with the bat, proved eminently successful with the ball , taking five wickets for 13 runs . Almost incessant rain prevented more than two hours ' play on Tuesday, and forbade anyplay at all on the third day. In the follow the Players did con- siderably better , Shrewsbury and Quaife being seen to special advantage . The gamewas ultimately left in a very interesting condition , the professionals being 3 2runso nwithhalftheirwicketsintact. W .G.Grace (capt .), c Ulyett ,b Lohmann 4 A. E.
