K e m p, while Middlesex lacked the services of Messrs Mordaunt, Hadow, and F. G. J. Ford. Hence three players newto County cricket madetheir initial appearance - M r. Scott Williams of the Lyric Club (a wicket -keeper) and Phillips for Middlesex , and Mr. A. Daffen of the Blackheath Club for Kent. Theground hadnot recovered from the recent rains , and Mr. Fox (33) and A. Hearne (28), whoadded 56 for the sixth wicket , alone offered any real resistance to the bowling of Burton and Phillips . Thanks to Messrs . Stoddart (59) and O'Brien (36), Middlesex managedto amass a total of 148 , and Kentstarted their second effort in a minority of 50 runs. G. G. Hearne was badly run out for 5, but Messrs . Marchant(56) and Fox offered a determined resistance to the attack , the last
