James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891

T H EM A R Y L E B O N EC L U BIN 1890. 6 5 (1 ) M.C.C.a n dG r o u n dv. Australians. September 8, 9, and 10. The Australian management had, with praiseworthy generosity , agreed to give the entire proceeds of a match to the benefit of the Cricketers ' Fund. A return with the premier Club was consequently decided upon , as it was found impossible , at so late a season , to collect ateamrepresentative of the Gentlemen ofEngland; andwebelieve the fund was benefited to the extent of £500 . A verygoodside was got together , including Mr. Spofforth , and on an excellent wickettheEnglishmenremained in all day. G u n n(118 ) and Chatterton (51) puton109 for the second wicket , and afterwards the first -namedand Mr. O'Brien (105), added no fewer than 159. At first it looked as though the Australians were in for a big score , as Lyons, who by splendid hitting made 99 out of 117 in an hour and a quarter , Trott , and Turner played so well that 200 went up with onlyfourm e nout. Ultimately they fell two runs short of the numberrequired to save the follow , and at the second attempt they broke downutterly . The M.C.C. wantedonly 44 to win, but against the fine bowling and fielding of the Colonials these cost themsix wickets . M.C.C. and Ground, 372 and 44 (six wickets ) ; total , 416.
