Smith (16.5 ): An excellent captain , sparing nopains for the good of both teamandground; the latter has seldom been better looked after ; his cricket has improved all round; is astraight slow-mediumbowler, with a break from off; agood bat onthe leg-side ,but apoor runner between wickets . C. F. Bigge (25.2 ): Areally goodbatwithsounddefenceandverycleandriving andcutting powers; shouldm a k ea first- rate wicket -keeper , but must practise the leg ones; did not bowl muchbut always cameoff ; a fine field andthrower . H. W. Keeling (14) : Is a good bowler though at first he was inaffective ; very straight with a good pitch and off -break ; a good bat andfine field . H. M. Harford (9.8) : Auseful bat, scoring fast while in; does not make enough behind the wicket ; a good ground field at mid-off , and muchimproved in his catching . J. W. Leary (11.1 ): Avery fair bat,but still woodenas to his wrists ; played some good innings ; bowled very well whenwanted and withmuchmore commandof the ball than last season . W. F. Hoare-Ward(4.8) : Disap- pointing; his batting , though not lacking form, failed to produce runs,chiefly through playing across ; his bowling lost its sting after five overs , which were generally good ; a good field and safe catch . W. P. Dean(5.2): Inproved greatly , andwill makeagood bat whenheunderstands forwardplay; canhit veryhard, andshould go infor it ; a very safe catch. C. J. H u d s o n (6.7): Lacksfire ; mustget hisleft shoulderd o w ninplayingforward, andpractise his leg-side play; avery straight change bowler . H. A. Ainsworth (12.82 ) : A stylish bat,playingwithconsiderable freedom; hasbeen unluckythis season; fields at point,andis the smartest m a nin the team; has been knownto bowl. R. O. Schwarz (9.27 ); Plays very straight andsteadily with confidence at critical times ; cuts well ; bowls occasionally ; a very safe field . G. L.
