James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891
1 6 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. WINCHESTERELEVEN IN 1890 .-*A. J. Boger : Is a thoroughly keen, good cricketer ; a really difficult slow bowler whenthe wicket suits him, though he has hardly improved in this department since last season ; and a very useful bat , with good nerve . As a captain he worked his bowling with unusually good judgment , and his eleven worked well together throughout the season . Hetook pains , too, with the general cricket of the school . *B. J. B. Stephens : Has kept wicket thoroughly well during two seasons ; he has lots of pluck ; is a very safe wicket -keeper in ordinary matches , and has kept very finely against Etonboth years ; as a bat he has improved , and can hit whenthe bowling is get- ting broken . *F.A. G. Leveson -Gower : Hadonly a fairly good season as abat ; begins an innings carefully and well , but is apt to get out just as he is getting at homewith the bowling ; either he tries to do more than he can, or he watches the ball less carefully ; a fair point . *B. L. Richmond : Avery care- ful bat, with a first -rate eye andgood cutting powers ; is slow, but hasimproved , as a field . C. Wigram : An excellent fast bowler , quite difficult enough , alters his pace well , and can last ; a good field anywhere ; plays a very good innings at times , but wants to knowmore about batting . H. D.G .Leveson -Gower: Promises to become a really good batsman as he gains in strength ; he has a thoroughly sound style , has plenty of strokes on both sides of the wicket , and knowsh o wmuchto attempt ; a quick and good field at cover-point. J. R. Mason: His average was largely owing to not -out innings , as he wentin last , but he has plenty of batting in him ; he is a reliable medium-pace bowler , bowling steadily to a length , and will make a good field . W. S. Case : Is a steady bat ; a safe field and catch ; and can bowl slow left -hand. L. O. Micklem : Hasmade quite wonderful improvement as a bat ; has some weak points , but quite as manyreally strong points in his play , and should do well in his next season ; he must improve as a field . R. L. Ricketts : Is one of the best fields onthe side , standing at extra short -slip ; can play fast bowling well, and is a very effective bat on his day. *E. G. Hemmerde: Has good nerve, and quite earned his place by all -round play, and by his batting at a crisis in more thanone match. There was no single -figure average on the side ; the eleven hada good pair of bowlers , and could play a hard match through . Thefielding w a sn o to u tofthec o m m o n . S C O T L A N D .
