James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891

1 6 4 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. UPPINGHAM ELEVEN IN 1890.-T. Westray (Captain ): A very good bat , being strong in defence , and can hit well at all points ; a good field at cover- point ; has proved himself a very good captain ; can put his field out well , and keep them in their places . G. R. Bardswell : Has not been so successful in bowling but it will no doubt return to him next year ; his batting , however , hascompensated for the loss of his bowling ; he plays in very good style , and when a little stronger ought to be very good . B. Auden : Hasgreatly disappointed us this season as a bat, giving promise of being a fast run-getter ; has done one or two good bowling performances , and is a capital out-field ; can keep wicket . T. Hemmant : Has not nearly done himself justice as a bat , experiencing hard luck whenwell set , but is always good for double figures ; has developed into a really first -rate slow bowler, breaking both ways; a splendid field anywhere. F. M. Lee : Has improved very muchas a bat, playing in aneasy style , having a very fine cut ; has bowled with success at times , varying his pace with judg- ment; a good point . W. M. Hemingway: A very consistent bat, hitting par- ticularly hard on the off side : can punish a loose ball with severity , has played some fine innings ; a magnificent field and catch at extra -cover. G. Field : Gave promise of being an excellent wicket -keeper , but unfortunately damaged his finger so badly as to necessitate his retirement as keeper ; has not been so successful as a bat through trying to pull straight balls to the leg side ; if he he could get over this fault he might be really good. A. C. Thompson : First to get his colours ; at the beginning of the year bowled remarkably well , giving promise of becoming a fast bowler ; but at the end of the season seemedto lose both length and action ; is slow in the field . A. P. Whitwell : Owes his average to not -out innings ; a good, steady run-getting bat ; a fair field , but should learn to hold catches . F. W. Westray : Avery fair bat , but plays too tamely at loose balls ; a good field in the country . S. S. Williams : A very fair fast bowler ; might be a good bat if he were to dispose of some flourish .
