McLaren (Captain ) : A nexceptionally fine bat, having strong defence , and hitting brilliantly all round ; scored most con- sistently all through the term ; is also a very fine field at mid-off , or indeed anywhere ; knows the game thoroughly , and filled the post of Captain with great judgment and energy . C. G. Pope (Capt . for 1891 ) : Bowled consistently well(right -handmedium-pace ) all through the term ; his best performance being against a strong team of Harlequins ; fairly good in the field , but has not improved much in batting . D. R. Napier : Bowls slow left , keeping them well onthe off side ; took several wickets in matches , and obtained the best bowling analysis ; never quite reached his batting form of the previous year; a very fair field . A. H. M. Butler : Very useful bat, and played some good innings during the term, but requires a hard wicket ; should be very good next year ; a goodfield at cover, andcantake the wicket whenrequired . W. B. Anderson : Bowls fast right , but was rather unlucky ; certainly has not fallen off , though his analysis was not so good as in previous year ; very fair bat , hitting well to the off and square leg ; and a good field anywhere . H. M. Peebles : Has been successful with his lobs this year ; bowled well first innings at Lord's ; as a bat has nice style , but generally gets out rather foolishly ; hits very well to leg ; has sharpened up into a good field . J. Gowans : Very painstaking cricketer , and keptwicket well throughout the term ; gave promise of becoming a very fair bat, but somehowfell off ; is capable , however, of knocking up twenty runs on a soft wicket . M. Y. Barlow: Hadnot muchluck this year, but hits very hard, and whenset is a most dangerous bat, and is pretty sure to come on another season ; only a very moderate field at point . J. C. Bevington : Has good defence , and can hit hard when once set ; another who should improve greatly next year; a very safe catch and field anywhere. E. S. Matthews : Early in the year seemed to have lost all form, but came on again suddenly and proved a very respectable bat ; not too brilliant in the field . C. J. L. Rudd: Has only the use of left hand; bowls fast and took several wickets , but fell off after slightly straining his side ; often knocks up a dozen runs , and a good one -hand field with quick return ,
