Woods (Brighton and Jesus ) : Captain , and a right good one ; one of the best cricketers in England; a very fast right- handbowler, with a quick break -back ; a magnificent field , being equally good in the deep field or near in; a sure catch , and, as a batsman, devoid of fear , and always to be relied on at a pinch ; a rare example for young cricketers to follow . G. McGregor (Uppinghamand Jesus ) : The best wicket -keeper in England, and a worthy second to the redoubtable Blackham, standing upto the fastest bowling with the greatest confidence ; muchimproved in his batting , and invaluable when nerve is wanted, as was evidenced at the Oval in Englandv. Australia . F. S. Jackson (Harrowand Trinity ) : Hardly sustained his school reputation , though a useful m a nin any eleven ; bowls fast right ; good field , and a fast run-getter whenset . R. N. Douglas (Dulwich and Selwyn): A thoroughly sound batsman , possessing very good defence , with considerable hitting powers ; a capital field anywhere. C. P. Foley (Eton and Trinity ) : A good batsman of the Eton style , and frequently getting runs whenwanted; good field and thrower . F. G. J. Ford (Repton and King's) : A good left- handed bowler, and a tremendous hitter ; excellent field at short -slip , his long reach standing him in good stead . E. C. Streatfeild (Charterhouse andPem- broke) : Amost useful manin anyeleven ; right -handbowler, altering his pace and pitch with great judgment; a hard hitter , and good field . H. Hale (Trinity ) : Right-handbowler , with a sharp break-back ; bowled very well in the University match; good field at point ; moderate batsman. R. C. Gosling (Eton andTrinity ) : Neverplayed up to his Eton form as a batsman, and too easily discouraged ; good field anywhere. D. L. A. Jephson : A good change right- hand bowler , and a fair bat , and good field . A. J. L.
