James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891

1 2 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. Players v. Australians. Sheffield , July 16 and 17. Thoughthe Players ' eleven was scarcely as strong as that which defeated the Australians so decisively at Lord's , it was strengthened by the presence of Shrewsbury . The Players were in during the greater part of the first day, Shrewsbury, Gunn(43), and Chatterton (41) contributing 149 out of 195 runs fromthe bat. The first -named played absolutely faultless cricket for his 65, which took himmore than three hours to make. Turner, owingto a strain , was only able to deliver sixteen overs , and the brunt of the attack fell uponFerris , Lyons , and Charlton . Lyons was by far the most successful , too , bowling fifteen overs for 42 runs and five wickets . W h e nthe Australians went in the ground afforded the bowlers considerable help, but, making all allowances , their show wasmost disappointing , and they had to follow on in a minority of 135. In their second essay they lost six wickets for 62. Turner (35), Blackham (36 not out), and Charlton (20), though, played up so well that the last four wickets added 99. ThePlayers wanted32to win, which were got for the loss of Ulyett's wicket. Players , 221 and 32 (one wicket ) ; total , 253. Australians , 91 and 161 ; total , 252.
