James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891
T H ECOUNTIESIN 1890. 1 1 7 this early promise was by no means sustained , yet their good cricket , following the disastrous season of 1889 , afforded great encouragement to Yorkshire's par- tisans . After a period of fluctuation , too , they woundup with brilliant wins over Surrey and Sussex , the return game with the metropolitan county pro- ducingoneof the most exciting finishes we have seen . Keensportsman as he is , LordH a w k ewas fittingly at the top of the batting ; Ulyett , whohad returned to formwith the bat if not with the ball , being a good second . Hall, Peel , and W a i n w r i g h twerenot so reliable , but useful all-roundcricketers werediscovered in Mr. E. Smith of Oxford University , Brownof Driffield , and (whenavailable ) Mr. F. S. Jackson of Cambridge. In bowling , Peel took ninety -one wickets for less than13 runs apiece , andWainwright's figures will also bear inspection . Mr. B. C. Bolton was tried as a fast -mediumbowler with some success , while Harrison, whobowled so successfully for Yorks several years since , reappeared in the last three matches with markedresults . He does not get nearly so much pace on the ball as of yore , and perhaps his delivery is somewhatopen to doubt ; still there is every reason to believe that he will prove of the utmost service to his countynext season . Tosumup, the record of Yorkshire cricket in 1890 was distinctly encouraging , especially in view of the exceedingly long list of engagementswhich its representatives had to fulfil .
