James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891

T H ECOUNTIESIN 1890. 1 1 1 Spofforth . Messrs . A. G. Steel , A. J. Webbe, Cranston , and Nepean were un- able to play for the Gentlemen; and in their absence a great compliment was paid to CambridgeUniversity by the selection of Messrs . Douglas, Streatfeild , and McGregor, the latter of w h o mis by far the best amateur wicket -keeper of the day. It was expected that , on a wicket not at all favourable to run -getting , the Players' great bowling strength would tell in their favour ; but nobody was prepared for such a breakdown in the batting of the Gentlemen, who, after losing one wicket for 48, were all disposed of for 99. The chief features of the Players' innings were the stand madeby Shrewsbury (43) and Gunn(44) for the second, and that by Barnes and Lohmannfor the seventh wicket . The two Notts professionals played splendidly together , 75 being the result of their partnership . Mr. Spofforth secured four wickets at a cost of 71 runs. A ttheir second attempt the Gentlemen fared almost equally badly, and but for Mr. Stod- dart they wouldhardly have saved the innings defeat . The Middlesex amateur scored 60 while his companion was making 7, and though he was missed twice, his 85 was as fine an exhibition of hitting as has ever been seen on the Oval, especially as the ground was. Lohmannmade the ball do a great deal in this second innings . ThePlayers , whoonly wanted 50 to win, got them for the loss of one wicket (Sugg's). Shrewsburyand G u n n, whoscored 75 and 58 respectively for once out, had the best aggregates on the winning side . The Players w o nbynine wickets . Players , 184 and 50 (one wicket ); total , 234.
