T H ECOUNTIESIN 1890. 1 0 9 by Hall, who in fifty -five minutes scored 64 (not out), punishing Lockwood to thetuneof twenty in one over. Surrey wonby an innings and 58 runs . Surrey, 541. Derbyshire , 181 and 302 ; total , 483 . (14) Surrey v. H a m p s h i r e. Southampton , August 25, 26, and 27 . Itwasa curiously unfamiliar team that did duty for Surrey in this match, Lockwood, Sharpe, andAbel being the only regular members present . Hamp- shire were in most of the first day for 202, of which Messrs . Bencraft (69) and Lacey(46) were responsible for more than one-half . The Surrey batting was chiefly remarkable for the good cricket of Ayres, whocarried his bat through theinnings for 53. Theyoung professional , whose first appearance in county cricket this was, played all the bowling with confidence , and scored 65 runs in the match without being once out . Rain interfered considerably with the play , andHampshire, who led by 43 on the completion of the first hands, declared their second innings closed at 63 for four wickets . Surrey lost Brockwell for 24 runs, and in that condition the gamehadto be left , the visitors being 82 behind with nine wickets in hand. Hampshire , 202 and 63 ; total 265. Surrey , 159 and24 (one wicket) ; total 183 . B a r t o n(1st inns. Surrey) O v e r s. M a i d e n s. 3 2 1 3 (15) Surrey v. Essex. Leyton , September 1, 2, and 3. R u n s. W i c k e t s. 5 7 6 Surrey had not its best eleven with Messrs . Shuter , W. W. Read, Streatfeild , andWoodall away. Their batting , too , was very uneven , Lohmann (88) and Abel(46) contributing 134 out of 175 from the bat. This pair added 108 for the second wicket, the hitting of Lohmannespecially being clean and hard. Essex got within two runs of their opponents ' total , but in the second " hands " the latter , thanks to M. Read(60), Mr. Key(54 not out), and Brockwell (38), amassed the good total of 277. Essex, though they struggled hard, could only respond with 224, and for this they were largely indebted to a very fine score of 92 by Mr. C. D. Buxton. The other principal scorers for Essex were Mr. Owen, with 40 and 20, andCarpenter , 41 and 4. Mr. C. M. Wells, the captain of Dulwich College eleven, madehis first appearance for Surrey in this match. Surrey w o nby 55 runs . Surrey, 178 and 277; total , 455. Essex, 176 and224 ; total , 400.
