James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1891

T H E COUNTIESIN 1890. 1 0 3 second in the first -class averages . Abel , after being quite out of the running during the earlier part , played two magnificent innings in August, and the little professional's success , lifting himas it did to the top of the averages , was very popular . Mr. Key, though he ultimately played himself into form , could not approach his brilliant batting of 1889 , nor were Messrs W. W. Read and Shuter in the run-getting vein that had distinguished them in past seasons . Maurice Read, whowas well at the head of the batting tables in the previous year, was not so reliable , though he played somevery fine innings . Henderson's ill success , too, caused himto be omitted from several engagements . After the earlier matches, Bowley and Beaumontalso were left out of the team, so that whena change wasneeded, the workdevolved upon Mr. Roller , Lockwood, Brockwell , Abel, and Mr. Read, none of w h o mcameoff very much. Indeed, the Cantab, Mr. E. C. Streatfeild , who only joined the eleven quite at the end of the season , was the onlybowler besides LohmannandSharpe whodelivered more than 100 overs in important matches, and he should prove a great addition to the attack . Mr. R. N. Douglas, also of Cambridge University , was only available on two occasions , but each time he batted admirably . For 1891 Surrey's prospects are most hopeful , as they have some fifteen or sixteen first -rate cricketers available. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
