Though the wicket played a little slow at the outset , Nottinghamshire , who w o nthe toss , remained in the greater part of the first day, eight of the batsmen getting double figures . Shrewsbury , who was batting three hours and a half for 61, Gunn(43), Barnes (22), were the principal scorers . The Australians fared badly enough against the bowling of Attewell and Shacklock , and were dis- missed for 62. Following on in a minority of 153, Gregory-whowas in at one timefor fifty minutes without scoring -Trott , Turner, and Walters played care- ful cricket , but the innings closed for 127, leaving Notts victorious by aninnings and25 runs . Gunn (73), Shrewsbury (45), and Shacklock (49) were the principal contributors to Notts' total of 284. Mr. Spofforth's bowling proved very ex- pensive , his four wickets costing 111 runs . Derbyshire could only score 213 in their twoattempts , though Sugg and Chatterton madea plucky effort to save the innings defeat . Flowers , Attewell , and Shacklock divided the bowling honours for Notts , who won by an innings and 71 runs . A curious incident occurred in the first innings of Derbyshire , when Chatterton was given out for "handling the ball ." He played the ball on to his body, where it lodged momentarily , and he appeared to remove it with his hands . Notts , 284. Derby- shire , 62 and 151 ; total , 213. Theground was slow from recent rains , and after leading by three runs on the first " hands ," the Australians were able to dismiss their opponents a second time for 138. Thoughat one time in their second innings the Colonials had 40 up for only one wicket , Flowers and Attewell bowled so successfully afterwards , that no long stand wasmade. Far and awaythe best batting in the matchwasthat of Gunn(47 and 50). For the rest , Attewell (30 and 3), and Shrewsbury (6 and 25), were each seen to advantage once. Murdochscored 33 and 6, Trott 23 and 12, Charlton 30 and 10, and Trumble 14 (not out ) and 15, for the losers . Notts w o n, after an exciting finish , by 20 runs .
