Theefforts of Sugg(171), Paul (not out 60), Mr. Hornby (47), A. Ward (46), and Baker (40) indeed resulted in a colossal total of 475. Sugg is always a fast scorer , and on this occasion he wasseen to special advantage , making171 out of 265 got while in. Together with Barlow, he made 103 for the first wicket in as manyminutes ; and his long innings was entirely free from mistakes . It is the highest score he hasyet madein first -class cricket . Briggs wasabsent , representing the Players against the Australians at Lord's ; but a useful substitute was found in J. Hewitson, of Preston , who bowled exceedingly well . Though Oxford scored well each time, they could not approach the Lancashire total , and had to put up with a defeat by an innings and 69 runs. Thebest scorers for Oxford were Schwann(33 and 38), Wilson (57 and 13), Smith (27 and 57), and Jardine (22 and 21). Lancashire , 475. Oxford University , 230 and 176 ; total , 406. (14) Lancashirev.
