Unfortunately for the prospects of an even match,luck befriended the stronger side altoget altogether , and the Gentlemen never had an outside chance , thanks to heavy rain on the first night . The elevens were rather different to those of the previous weekat the Oval, Messrs . A. P. Lucas, Key, A. G. Steel , and F. G. J. Ford taking the places of Messrs . W. W. Read, Cranston , Newham, and Bishop onthe one side , and Briggs , Chatterton , Shacklock , Attewell , andFlowers for Richardson , Quaife , Wright, Ulyett , Richardson , and Shrewsbury, the last of whomhad injured his hand in the first match . The Players , winning the tose ,had the advantage of batting first on a good wicket , and were fairly well got rid of for a total of 280. The feature of the innings was the brilliant cricket of Barnes. Goingin first wicket downat 13, he scored 130 out of 267 madewhile he wasat the wickets . Abadmiss at long -slip whenhe hadgot 67 was the only mistake during his long innings , lasting over three hours and fifty minutes . Heavyrain on the first night had affected the ground materially whenit cameto the turn of the Gentlemen to bat, and with Lohmann, Briggs , Attewell , Flowers , Barnes , and Shacklock , not to mention Chatterton to bowl , the game was practically , under 5
