Aremarkable instance of the application , or rather mis-application of the newrule about declaring the innings at anend, took place onAug.10, in amatch betweenBarton-le-Street and Castle H o w a r d2nd Eleven. T h elatter wentin first , andscored 85 to their opponents 44 ; in their 2nd innings , however, after making29 for two wickets , the captain declared the innings at an end; 71 were required to winand only 40 minutes remained for play . Barton-le-Street , how- ever, knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets , five minutes before time. A L o n gDistancefor the Bail. In a match on the County AsylumGround on Sep. 18, Barrett , for the CountyAsylum, bowled a ball which knocked the bail a distance of 34 yards . Mr. H. O. Whitby, for Derby School against Ashbourne, on July 11 , sent a bail 38 yards . In the match between Cheltenham and Marlborough Colleges on June, A. J. L.
