1 7 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. SedberghSchool.-Matches played , 11; won,6; drawn , 3; lost , 2.-P. H. L'Estrange (19.58 ): In batting has had a chequered career ,though upon two occasions he came off when his side were sadly in need of runs ; plays forward well to well -pitched -up balls , but finds it difficult to play straight at a short one ; thoroughly energetic in the field ; he has made an excellent captain . W. C. Shepherd (14.307 ): Plays forward well ,though in ugly style ; is very apt toplay late ; avery useful slow bowler, with a break from leg; fair field . H. J. Decket (10.76 ): Hasnot fulfilled his last year's promise ; plays forward well , and cuts well when set; very weak inback play ; asurprising bad judge of arun; very slow in the field ; has been very useful behind the wickets . H. W, Sewell (18.18 ) : Avery bad beginner ,but when well set plays in good style ; plays forward too quickly to slow bowling ,and his hits to leg are often muchtoo lofty ; anexceedingly useful all-round man; a safe catch . G. W. Gossage (1): Illness has kept himfrom the field most of the term ; fields well at cover -point ,and bats very nicely atthe nets, but extreme nervousness in a matchspoils all his chances of scoring . W.Robertson (16.076 ): Plays back well , though he often loses his wicket through relying too frequently on stroke ; a very nervous beginner , and seldom dare trust himself to play forward whenhe first goes in; a very fair field , but slow. A. W. Odgers (18.5 ): A very useful memberof the eleven; bowls agood ball on the leg stump that curls in the air , but sends down far too many long-hops ; when well set plays in good form , but does not move his left foot sufficiently to the pitch of the ball in playing forward . S. B. Bendle (27.6 ): The best batsman in the eleven ; his weakest stroke is playing back ; suffers very little from nervousness , and nearly always "comes off " at a critical point of the match ; a brilliant field , and a fair wicket -keeper . S. E. Whiteway (10.8 ) : Has a good style , and makes one or two good strokes on the off side ; should improve rapidly with more experience ; avery good field andfair change bowler for an over or two. H.W. Hooke (11.375 ):Atthe beginning of term he was in excellent form ,but fell off somewhat at theclose ; his forward play is good, but his batting lacks vigour , and he often plays late ; catches well ,and has agood return . W. Farrer (5.5 ) : On his day avery successful bowler ,and more likely to capture agood wicket than any one else in the eleven . Hevery quickly tires , and should not be allowed to bowl manyovers without a rest ; a very fair batsman , and always on the alert in the field . H. C. Hadow: Has a good eye and hits hard , but is much too fond of opening his shoulders to every ball that passes ; has an excellent bowling action , and with care- ful practice should make rapid improvement ; a very fair field . Alexander (10.13 ) : Uncertain on first going in, bats well whenset, punishing all leg -balls ; good catch . A. Barraclough (9.1 ) : Cuts very hard , but should cultivate other strokes as well ; good behind the wicket . J. Dent (6) : Fair bat and field . E. H. Dyson (7.4): Plays in a taking style and ought to be good next season . R. M. Hall (13.3): Improved wonderfully as a bat, plays straight and with confidence ; a very smart field . J. L. Heppell (5.18 ) : Byfar the best bowler (slow -medium); has bowled well throughout the season anddoneagreat deal ofwork; fair left -handed bat. W. A. Hulton (2.6): Poor bat; has improved infielding . C. S. Kewney (2.3) : Disappointing both as a bat and bowler . F. Loe (10):Didnot play often , but showed great promise as an all -round cricketer . J. W. Smith (14.3): Bats in a style peculiar to himself ; has frequently made runs when most wanted ; by nomeansenergetic enough as a captain . C. J. Todd(9.2) : Is a patient bat, only he should learn tohit ; useful bowler ; very slow field . Mr. H. A. Crallan (21.5 ), Mr. D. G. Evans (19.6 ), Mr. A. E. Oakes (4.7 ), and Brass (pro .)
