James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1890

1 6 8 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. improvement in his fielding ; at third manhe was often quite smart . N. Monckton (27.3 ) : Themost useful manin the eleven all round, with bat andball ; has a good forward style , and canpunish a loose ball on the off side ; bowls with a high delivery , medium, right arm, and a fair break ; his credit was spoilt by some unaccountably wretched fielding towards the end of the season ; this fault was all the more unpardonable , as it was of recent growth. C. V. Windsor (19.7 ) : A very steady bat, with good defence , and a good change bowler ; will be most useful whenhe gets more power ; has a safe pair of hands, but is often too glued to the same spot in the field . J. C. Alsop (12.5 ): A moderate player , whose fate frembled long in the balance , and was determined by a safe pair of hands. G. A. Feilden (12.3 ): Cameout once or twice , and decidedly improved on last season ; a bad judge of a run, like manyof his com- panions ,but was a better thrower than several . C. F. W. Stork (32.9 ): Pressed Monckton hard for the pride of place , but in our opinion was just out of it ; at the same time, if he goes on improving , he will be a thorn in the side of some of our opponents next year ; he is a trifle too stiff inhis batting , and is apt to scoop the ball up; might with advantage practise a looser swing now and then during the winter ; fair field . H. Ricketts (6) : The fast bowler , with a predilection for yorkers ; apt to get too excited . C. W. Hayward(36.1 ): A free hitter , who oftencameoff in school games, but was decidedly lucky in winning the average bat ; the best out-field in the eleven , and thoroughly deserved his place . P. N. Pitts (6.1): A painstaking bat, anda good field ; but wefancy from several curiously uncertain performances in the field he musthave been troubled with nerves . G. F. Davies (8.1): Obtained his place as wicket- keeper, which place he ought not to have filled ; has cricket in himif he will bring it out ; can field. B O W L I N G A V E R A G E S . Ricketts Stork.. Gardner (16.6 ): Notwithstanding injured hand has batted mostconsistently ; steady player , with fair punishing powers ; reliable field . F. S. Wells (16.3): Displayed most excellent form at beginning of season; very strong on off side ; really good fast bowler, and sure field . A. L. Harris (11.7 ) : Not nearly so successful as formerly ; powerfulo nleg side w h e nfairly past first fewovers ; excellent field . C. Higgins(10.1) : Very steady bat; has been of immense service at critical times ; splendid field ; good left -hand bowler , with break both ways. T. J. Phillips (6.6) : Fair bat,but hasnot at all improved in this respect ; good bowler; hasdone some remarkably good things ; hard-working field . G. A. Messenger (5.1): Fast bowler ; has not fulfilled expectations ; on his daydifficult ; sure and untiring in the field . J. H. Bentley (6) : Moderate bat,but improving ; slow field ; requires muchmorepractice . H. J. Davis (3.1) : Safe field , with quick return ; poor bat. W. Smith (1.3): Hasnot fulfilled last year's promise , but still very young. G. Ritchie (1.1): Pretty and clean field . W. Faulkner (21.2) : Goodhard bat whensettled ; should develop into first -rate wicket-keeper. B O W L I N G A V E R A G E S . O v e r s. M a i d e n s. R u n s. Wickets. Average. T. J. O'Connor : Possesses plenty of hitting power, and should develop into a first -rate bat; dangerous left -hand bowler , with a high delivery , and very fair field . D. Cope: Erratic left -handbowler ,but dangerous on some wickets ; steady bat, andslow scorer , andsleepy in the field . W. Palmer: Very smart field , and in batting has some good strokes onthe off . H.
