James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1890
1 5 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. patience and lack of defence has seldom played an innings of any length ; a useful though uncertain change bowler ; an excellent field anywhere, quite the best in the eleven . *T. E. Bayley : Agood , steady bat , with strong defence , has improved greatly towards the end of the term , very good on the off , but veryweakto leg ; the steadiest bowler in the eleven , with a nice , easy action ; has several times proved very deadly ; fair field . *A. N. Fleming : As a bowler, has been rather disappointing this year , owing chiefly to the fast wickets ; has a very good fast " yorker ; " has one stroke as a bat, reaching out well forward ; defence weak. *G. N. Normand : At the beginning of season scored very regularly ; hits well all round , specially on the leg -side ; poor field . *W. N. Boase : If moresteady , wouldbe a good bowler, having a high delivery , and on a dead wicket a nasty break -back, but bowls too manyloose balls ; as a bat, sometimes useful in keeping up the wicket ; a safe field . *W. M. Landale : Improved a great deal since last year, having a very good forward stroke on the off , whichhe is apt to overdo ; poor back play ; fair field . C. F. Marshall : If hecould learn to play straight forward, would make a useful bat ; at present his defence is weak; a safe field in the country . E. P. Thomson : Theprettiest andmost finished bat in the eleven on a fast wicket ; back play too feeble to be good on a slow one; should be good next year ; very slow in the field . *J. H. Hall : Agood bat, with especially strong back play , but has a weak spot on his leg stump; a smart field , but uncertain catch ; with practice would keep wicket really well , *A. Taylor : An excellent wicket -keeper , neat and quick ; once or twice has shownvery stubborn defence as a bat. J. N. Normand: A very sound bat as far as he goes , with stubborn defence and great hitting power to leg ; will makea good bat ; very slow in the field . L O R E T T O S C H O O L . Captain for 1889 , P.
