James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1890

1 3 6 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. A. Harding : Akeen, hard-working cricketer ; wasbowling rather wildly at the beginning of the season , but has kept a muchbetter length lately ; very energetic in the field , and a greatly improvedbat. L. B. Corbett : Wasin wonderful form in the middle of the term, buthas developed one or two weak strokes lately ; plays with a perfectly straight bat to every ball , and whenset places the ball with great judgment; a safe field . H. S. Pike : W a svery successful at first , buthas not done much lately ; a length ball outside the off stump often proves fatal to him in the slips , and his leg hitting is weak; a beautiful ground field in the country , with an accurate return . H. Watts : Has proved invaluable behind the wickets , and is much above the average ; lets very few pass him, and takes the ball in excellent form; if he keeps it up he ought to makehis mark; improved as a bat, and at times has played excellent cricket . *C. G. W. Willett : Agreatly improved cricketer ; judges the pitch of the ball muchbetter , and plays straight , but cannot punish hard ; is weak off his leg ; somewhat slow in the field . T. B. Rhodes : W o nhis cap chiefly on his fielding ; covers a lot of ground, and is quite sure in his picking up and catching ; ought to have made moreruns ; his leg -hitting is good, but he is apt to play with a very cross bat. H.K. Foster : Hasnot proved so successful as was expected , possibly from ill- health ; has lots of cricket in him, and ought to prove an effective bat whenhe is stronger ; has a good cut and off -drive , but is weakon his leg and leg -stump; veryslow and unsafe in the field . F. A. Coleridge : Bowled very effectively against Rossall , and has steadied downin pitch and pace considerably since the beginning of the season ; an improved bat, hits hard, but his defence is very unsound; muchsurer and quicker in the field . W. E. Copleston : Hascome on a lot lately , andhas well deserved his place ; has an awkwardstyle , but watches the ball well ; might have been tried more as a bowler ; greatly improved field . *J. H. Lindsay : Beganwell and fell off considerably , but is again picking up his form ; has some good forward strokes , and plays back hard and with a straight bat ; wastes a lot of time and strength in his flourish which he ought to dispense with; very unsafe and slow in the field . J. C. Wall : Uses his long reach well inhis forward play, and is generally effective whenthe wicket is fast and true ; his back play is weak, andhe is not to be depended onwhenthe wicket plays at all false ; slowin the field .
