Richards (Capt.) : Asafe run-getting bat (left -hand), with a very strong defence ; hits very hard on the leg-side, anddrives well whenhe tries ; bowls with a good, high action , and has been very successful ; smart in the field . *G. W. Gruggen: A patient batsman, rather weakin playing forward; played well in the first fewmatches, but has been unlucky since ; a steady bowler , and good field . M. R. Church : Though notvery successful in the beginning of the season , has developed into a really goodbat, scoring consistently ; hits hard all round; has fielded short -slip all through the season with fair success , backing up well ; canbowl. F. C. Cooper : Unfortunately broke his finger after playing in the earlier matches ; bats straight , but is still cramped ; works hard in the field . *H. F. Laycock : Has obtained his place bythe keenness he has shownall through the season ; good slow bowler whenthe ground helps him; fair bat, and can hit , generally getting runs. *F. Pellatt : Bowledwell throughout , though not successful onthehard wickets ; gets considerable work on the ball ; a fair bat, with a good reach ; poor field . *E. D. Compton : Has just lately comeout as a wicket -keeper ; should be good with practice ; bats in good style , and has improved greatly of late . *G. W. Stopford : Has made runs , and is a fair bat on a fast wicket ; hits hard to leg ; should learn to play back with more vigour ; a good and plucky field . H. W. Hallward : One of the most promising bats in the eleven , playing invery pretty style ; usually stays in a long time for his runs, though hehasnot mademany; has fielded well in the slips and in the country . *F. S. Sparrow : Useful bat to go in first , plays very straight and carefully , and rarely fails to score ; has lately fielded point with great success . *N. Locke : A hard hitter , with plenty of pluck ; has more than once been of great use ; would makea good fast bowler with a little more trouble ; has a very good idea of fielding , but is apt to get careless . *J. E. M. Carroll (12th man) : Has in no w a yfulfilled his last year's promise as a bowler or a bat, though hehas got afewwickets and a few runs at the beginning of the season ; slow and slovenly inthefield ,
