BRIGHTONELEVEN IN 1889. -*N. C. Cooper (Captain ) : Showedno falling off in his straight and steady defence , but hardly developed his hitting as might have been expected ; in bowling he has improved , and on dry wickets was always the mainstay of the attack ; a first -rate field . *L. H. Gay (Hon. Sec .) : B ynature a slashing hitter , so improved his defence as to play some steady innings which were invaluable to his side ; kept wicket , with the exception of a fewbaddays, in first -rate style . *F. J. Noakes : Batted in correct butmechani- cal style , and was too often taken by surprise ; fielded excellently , and was a useful change bowler . A.J. Meissner : A most effective bowler, left -hand medium, on a wicket that suits him, but on fast true wickets loses heart and pitch ; fields well ; bats right -handed in a left -arm style of his own. Jupp: Apromising young player, has a good eye and cuts beautifully , but is impatient of defence ; bowls slow , with a tremendous break from leg , andwhen hehasmorecontrol of pitch andpace may, with a good field to back him, prove an awkwardcustomer to any batsman. *R. Young: Bats in good style, and seems to have plenty of power, butfrom want of nerve has only once done him- self justice ; a capital field . W. H. Picton : A wonderfully sound and steady bat considering his small size ; ought to do great things next year ; cannot cover m u c hground in the field . *H. C. Holland : A nexpensive fast bowler, nowand thenhashis day, but cannot stand being hit ; his present idea of batting is to slog hard; can field brilliantly . *A. G. Cavendish : Adisappointing bat, has some good strokes , but his defence is careless ; fields well, and can bowl a little . *A. D. Heward : Apatient and well -meaning player , but by keeping his elbowsglued to his ribs has cramped and enfeebled his style ; is somewhatweak in the field . G. M. Robinson : A brilliant fielder , can catch almost_anything
