Lea (Captain ) : A n excellent bowler ; very straight , and with considerable break at times ; by steady practice became a very good batsman, somewhat stiff in style , but a sure run-getter ; captained the team most creditably . *W. B. Jenyns (Hon. Sec.) : A very fine out-field , saving any numberof runs ; with the bat was as uncertain as in 1888, but now and then hit brilliantly . G. M. T. Smyth : A very steady bat , nearly always safe for runs ; has good style , but wants more life , especially against slows . *W. T. Gellibrand : Played very badly at the beginning of the season , but im- proved greatly towards the end , showing more steadiness than he has ever done before ; a safe catch in the out-field , and perhaps not slower than last year. C. E. Nicholl : At his best a capital bowler, but too uncertain ; has a good yorker , and canbumpwell, but should keep to one action ; a very fair bat, with a good stroke on the leg side . *H. H. Crawley : A steady bat, with a good cut, but has not improved in style , especially in his back -play , which is very tame; lets the ball hit the bat far too often ; might be a good field if he used both hands. T. G. Scott : Will be a good bat whenhe has finished growing ; takes pains and plays straight , but cannot hit . G. F. Warren : Has improved immensely with the bat, and will , we hope, be very good next year. The promise he once showed of becoming a really good bowler is still very far from being fulfilled . R. B. Reiss : Very fair all round ; can hit well, and was ause- ful change bowler. H. W.Fife : Played very well for the Second Eleven against Radley, but wants more defence against good bowling ; might avoid a certain flourish in style ; fields well with his shins . S. V. Shea: Wouldbecome a very goodcricketer if he had time for proper practice . B R I G H T O N C O L L E G E . Captain for 1889 , N. C. Cooper. R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s.
