James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1890

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1889. 9 7. records Yorkshire's doings in 1889 is really a reflex of the actual merits of the eleven. It is difficult to attempt to explain ten defeats in fourteen matches, but two of the victories registered against Yorkshire were by the barest of majorities , and it must not be forgotten that they had certainly none the worst of the drawn gamewith Notts at Sheffield . If it is difficult , though , to explain away such a long list of defeats it is a far from easy task to give any reason which would carry conviction for these numerous reverses . O npaper Yorkshire had a good working side , with more than one youngster of undoubted promise . The batting was, perhaps , more on paper than in reality ; and some of those who have been most useful in past years were hardly as reliable as of old . Lord Hawke, Ulyett , Lee, and Wade, none of them came up to their reputations ; and though Wainwright frequently proved of the greatest use , the tail certainly did not showany great strength . Thebowling , too , was disappointing , failing altogether tocomeup to what we mayterm its paper form . Peel had to do most of the work, anddid it well , getting in all eighty wickets during the season . Wade, of whomgreat things were expected , has latterly done little ; and though at times effective , Wainwright , and Whitehead , the colt , hardly came up to early promise. Theeleven somehowor other seemed to lack cohesion , and there was a nabsence of the emulation which was a noticeable feature of some county elevens last year . The fielding , in particular , was at times very faulty , and to this material defect wasto be attributed some slight share of their ill -success . Resultso f M a t c h e s.
