James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1890
9 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. Philipson , whoscored 55 runs in the hour, to compensate for someof their short- comings . ThePlayers had by no means an easy task whenthey went in wanting 177 to win, and with only two hours and a half left for play. To succeed they required to score at the rate of 71 an hour, but from the first Quaife and G u n n maderuns at a great rate , and the first sixty minutes realized 81. Still the total increased at a brisk rate , and it looked as if the two menwould secure the victory off their ownbats . At 155, however, Quaife was bowled for another faultless innings of 59, and it was left to Gunnand Barnes to settle the business , leaving the Players in possession of a brilliant victory bynine wickets twenty minutes before time. Gunn's 98 not out, was a brilliant display of batting . H eshowed the greatest confidence , as well as judgment , throughout , and it was hard luck thathedid not complete his hundred. H e never seemed at a loss with any of the bowlers , and, indeed , it looked from the first as if the runs wouldbe got. In all 1,145 runs were scored in the three days, and this we believe to be the largest aggregate in an important match at the Oval. G E N T L E M E N . W.G. Grace (Capt .)
