Eight of the Surrey eleven got double figures , but the most successful were Lockwood(117 not out), Henderson (73), and Mr. W. W. Read, who had to retire hurt after getting 66. Mr. W.W.Read's injured handprevented himplaying , and as six of Surrey's regular eleven were away, a place was found for another young cricketer , Watts, who played for the first time. Hampshire a second time w o n the toss , but the result of the batting was hardly so good as at Southampton, and, asin the first match, Mr. Lacey (47 and 30) was the main stay of the side . All the first nine batsmen of Surrey got double figures , and Mr. Trouncer (50), Watts (50) , W o o d(49), and Mr. C. L. Morgan, all showed to advantage . The colt Watts, in particular , madea favourable impression . H e stands well over six feet , andgot 50 of the first 70 runs in fifty minutes , in commandingstyle , play- ing hard and hitting all round with great freedom . Heavyrain m a ybe held partly accountable for the poor show of the Hampshire batsmen in the second innings . Baldwin took the three last wickets of Surrey in twelve balls for two runs .
