Leewasunable to play for Yorkshire , and Mr. H. Hill , of Dewsbury, took his place . The earlier batsmen of Surrey, who wonthe toss , scored freely , and. Mr. Shuter (56), M. Read (90), and Mr. W. W. Read(50), helped to makean unusually good start . The third wicket fell with the total at 218, but the rest failed to make even a moderate show, and an addition of 39 saw the innings over. Beaumonthas usually been successful against the county of his. birth ,but Lohmanndid the most execution , andPeel (34), whowas in while 93 were added , alone shaped well against his bowling . In the follow on the innings . opened muchmore favourably , and the deficit of 116 was wiped off with only three wickets down. Hall (48), Wade (36), Ulyett (34), and Mr. Hill (33) gave promise of a long score , but this was not maintained , and 58 was the result of the second half of the innings . With72 wanted to win, Mr. Shuter andAbel maderuns fast , and the former was not out till the score was 69-50of which ,
