7 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. Amateurs. Winningthe toss , Ulyett put the Gentlemen in, and so well did the Players bowl, combined with a brilliant performance of Sherwin at the wicket, that the innings was quickly over for the small total of 84, 10 of which belonged to Dr. W. G., and 25 to Mr. N e w h a m. The Players , however, found the wicket far from easy to score on, and only three of themwere able to get into double figures , Peel 28, M. Read 14, and Ulyett 38-this last an excellent performance . W h e nthe Amateurs went in again Mr. W . G. Grace headed the score with 21, Mr. Shuter played well for 17, and Mr. Eccles added 11 , out of anaggregate of just a hundred. This left the Players 78 to win, and as 71 o f these were obtained for six wickets the g a m eseemed over. A tthis point , however, Mr. C. A. Smith wasput on to assist Mr. Woods, and between themthey took the remaining four wickets for a single run, winning the match for the Gentlemen by five runs amidst great excitement .
