James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1889
THE MARYLEBONECLUB IN 1888. 1 6 9 8 37 3 29 2 1 6 1 1 ..171 decidedly the best feature of his side's innings . Mr. Woods delivered 20 overs , 16 runs, and 5 wickets after the recommencement. With47 runs in hand, the Cambridge captain , Mr. C. D. Buxton, opened the innings with Mr. Mordaunt, and, scoring very freely , made30 out of the 51 runs while he was in. Mr. Butler a second time played well for 26, while , curiously enough, Mr. Gosling again carried out his bat for an excellent 18, and his partnership with Mr. Meyrick-Jones (36) a second time produced an invaluable addition of 43 runs to the score . TheCambridge total being within a unit of their first total , left Oxford the formidable task of knocking off 218 runs , and it was hoped there wouldbe a chance of finishing the match on the fourth day. Again, though , rain was unpleasantly in evidence , and the gamehad to be abandoned about lunch-time, as storm after storm swept over the ground. H. J. Mordaunt(Eton), c andb Croome E.
