Lillywhite : it is really the neatest thing wehave seen for a long time. Except for being metal-shod,it scarcely differs in appearance from the ordinary stump, but the difference of its behaviour under the smart cannonade of modernbowling can hardly be overestimated . The hollow iron spike by which it holds the ground remains , when once pitched , undisturbed for the day, instead of rooting up the soil like a wild boar every time it receives the attentions of a successful bowler . This alone is no meanadvantage ; but the wicket -keeper , who can nowstand close into his work, will find one even more important in the fact that he is in no risk of losing an eye or his front teeth from a flying stump.-Vide "Olympia."
