James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1889
5 6 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. games , and though he took a little more to hitting towards the end, rarely failed to score . Of the others , Mr. Dubashwas undoubtedly the best , though Messrs . Bapasola , Pavri , and the captain , and Morenas, whohardly fulfilled his promise of 1886 , were useful at times . Someof the bowling was quite upto the average . Mr. Pavri's figures in par- ticular were above the ordinary . H ebowled fast round-arm, of a good length, and towards the end of the tour developed a very good style , varying his pace and pitch well , besides makingthe ball do a good deal at times . H e delivered , as will be seen , over five thousand balls at a cost of just under two thousand runs, and took in all a hundred and seventy wickets for an average of less than twelve runs -really good figures . Mr. Pandole, though more expensive , was very successful in the earlier matches, and Mr. P. D. Kanga's fast underhand puzzled the batsmen at times considerably . The younger Kanga, a left -hand medium-pace bowler, too, did good service more than once, having a neat de- livery with accuracy of pitch . If sometimes uneven, the fielding was generally good, not seldom brilliant . Commencing at Leyton on June 7th , they finished at the Oval on Sept. 13th , so that the really active part of the tour extended over a little more than three months. On the whole they had no reason to be dissatisfied with the cricket they showed, and the successes they had will no doubt stimulate themto gain greater proficiency in the game. The establish- ment of a Gymkanain Bombayfor the regulation of Parsee sports should bring their cricket under a proper organization , andtend to consolidate it to the advan- tage of anyfuture tours . Theresults of the matches and the averages of the team are given here. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches Played, 31 ; W o n, 8 ; Drawn, 12 ; Lost , 11 . Opponents.
