T H ET W OE N G L I S HT E A M SI N A U S T R A L I A . 2 6 1 (Leicestershire ) ; J. Briggs and R. Pilling (Lancashire ) ; G. Lohmannand M .Read(Surrey). F r o mfirst to last the team proved to be very strong at all points , and though they were twice beaten byN e wSouth Wales, their performances proved themto be an unusually formidable side . With Lohmann, Briggs , Pougher, andPreston , with Mr. C. A. Smith in reserve , there was plenty of bowling, and in fact the out-cricket was altogether of a very superior order . Inbatting , too , on several occasions the team showed themselves to be a very dangerous side . O n eof their records in particular deserves special mention. W erefer to the matchagainst Victoria at Melbourne, in December, 1887 , when 624 runs were madebefore the last wicket fell . Onthat occasion Shrewsbury's eleven wonby an innings and456 runs, and the match was productive of three distinct records in gamesbetween English andColonial cricketers : the mostdecisive victory , the largest total , and the highest individual score (232 by Shrewsbury ) made by an Englishmanin Australia . Arthur Shrewsbury's batting was of course one of the most noticeable incidents of the trip . Twice he made over 200 runs in aninnings , and his average wasvery far in advance of any other batsman. Briggs and Lohmannbore the brunt of the bowling, but Mr. Smith, Pougher, and Preston all lent useful aid whenrequired , and Pilling's wicket -keeping was up to its very best standard-no meanpraise .
