One of the very best all -round cricketers of the day; a reliable bowler on all wickets , with plenty of work, varies his pace and pitch with judgment; a very dangerous bat at times , with plenty of hit , always reliable at a pinch ; a brilliant field anywhere, but was particularly suc- cessful at short -slip , where he made a number of wonderful catches .
